Who Is the Rock of Our Salvation?

Bible Study by Loretta Gibelyou

Objective:
To see Him as the Rock and/or Stone of both the Old Testament and the New Testament.

Exodus 13:21

And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night.

I Corinthians 10:1–4

#1. Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;
#2. And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;
#3. And did all eat the same spiritual meat;
#4. And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.
Note: God is our Rock.

Deuteronomy 32:1–4

#1. Give ear, O ye heavens, and I will speak; and hear, O earth, the words of my mouth.
#2. My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distill as the dew...
#3. Because I will proclaim the name of the Lord: ascribe ye greatness unto our God.
#4. He is the Rock, His work is perfect; for all His ways are justice; a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is He.

Psalm 18:31

For who is God, save the Lord? Or who is a rock, save our God?

Psalm 118:22

The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.

Psalm 62:1–2

#1. Truly, my soul waiteth upon God: from Him cometh my salvation.
#2. He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defense; I shall not be greatly moved.

Psalm 94:22

But the Lord is my defense; and my God is the rock of my refuge.

Genesis 49:22–24

#22. Joseph is a fruitful bough, even a fruitful bough by a well whose branches run over the wall:
#23. The archers harassed him, shot at him, and hated him;
#24. But his bow abode in strength, and the arms of his hands were made strong by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob (from there is the shepherd, the stone of Israel).

Daniel 2:31–35

#31. Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before thee, and the form of it was terrible.
#32. This image’s head was of fine gold, its breast and its arms of silver, its belly and its thighs of bronze,
#33. Its legs of iron, its feet part of iron and part of clay.
#34. Thou sawest until a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon its feet that were of iron and clay, and broke them to pieces.
#35. Then were the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshing floors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them; and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.

Isaiah 28:16

Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation; he that believeth shall not make haste.

1 Peter 2:5–8

#5. Ye also, as living stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
#6. Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Zion a chief cornerstone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.
#7. Unto you therefore who believe he is precious, but unto them who are disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,
#8. And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them who stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.

Matthew 16:15–18

#15. He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?
#16. And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the Living God.
#17. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father who is in heaven.
#18. And I say also unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hades shall not prevail against it.
#19. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

1 Corinthians 3:11

For other foundation can no man lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 2:19–22

#19. Now, therefore, ye are no more strangers and sojourners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God;
#20. And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone,
#21. In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:
#22. In whom ye also are built together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

Acts 4:8–12

#8. Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel,
#9. If we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made well;
#10. Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you well.
#11. This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.
#12. Neither is there salvation in any other; for there is no other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

Colossians 1:15–22

#15. Who is the image of the invisible God, the first-born of all creation;
#16. For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers – all things were created by him, and for him;
#17. And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
#18. And he is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the first-born from the dead, that in all things he might have the pre-eminence.
#19. For it pleased the Father that in him should all fullness dwell;
#20. And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself – by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.
#21. And you, that were once alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled
#22. In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreprovable in His sight.

Ephesians 1:22–23

#22. And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,
#23. Which is His body, the fullness of him that filleth all in all.

Isaiah 8:14–15

#14. And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offense to both the houses of Israel, for a trap and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
#15. And many among them shall stumble and fall, and be broken, and be snared, and be taken.

Matthew 21:42–46

#42. Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes?
#43. Therefore say I unto you, the kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.
#44. And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.
#45. And when the chief priests and Pharisees had heard his parables, they perceived that he spoke of them.
#46. But when they sought to lay hands on him, they feared the multitude, because they regarded him for a prophet.

Luke 6:46–49

#46. And why do you call me Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
#47. Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will show you to whom he is like:
#48. He is like a man who built a house, and dug deep, and laid the foundation on a rock; and when a flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house and could not shake it; for it was founded upon a rock.
#49. But he that heareth, and does not, is like a man that, without a foundation, built a house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.

1 Corinthians 3:11

For other foundation can no man lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

Exodus 17:1–7

#1. And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, after their journeys, according to the commandment of the Lord, and encamped in Rephidim: and there was no water for the people to drink.
#2. Wherefore the people did strive with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why strive ye with me? Wherefore do ye put the Lord to the test?
#3. And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Why hast thou brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?
#4. And Moses cried unto the Lord, saying, What shall I do unto this people? They are almost ready to stone me.
#5. And the Lord said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go.
#6. Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.
#7. And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the striving of the children of Israel, and because they tested the Lord, saying, Is the Lord among us, or not?

John 7:37–39

#37. In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink.
#38. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water.
#39. (But this spoke he of the Spirit, whom they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Spirit was not yet given; because Jesus was not yet glorified.)
